When the World Is Too Loud — and Somehow Not Loud Enough

The vacuum cleaner starts and hands immediately go over ears. Someone yells for it to stop. The television gets turned down, the exhaust fan is switched off, and a sibling is asked to stop humming because suddenly every sound in the house seems to matter.
Maybe there are tears. Maybe there is screaming. Maybe the person runs to their bedroom and shuts the door. Maybe nobody else in the house can understand why a completely ordinary household sound has caused such an intense reaction.
Then, half an hour later, the same person is playing music loudly, pacing from one end of the room to the other, chewing the collar of their shirt, jumping onto the couch or squeezing themselves between two cushions.
To somebody watching from the outside, it can look completely contradictory.
How can noise be unbearable when you make so much noise yourself? How can you hate being touched but seek extremely firm pressure? How can a tiny seam inside a sock ruin the morning while crashing full-force into a cushion feels fantastic?
Because autistic sensory processing is not simply about being “too sensitive”.
For some autistic people, certain sensory information can arrive with extraordinary intensity. Other sensory information may barely register at all, leaving the person actively seeking more movement, pressure, sound, texture or stimulation.
Sometimes the nervous system is saying too much.
Sometimes it is asking for more.
And sometimes both things happen in the same person, on the same day.
There Is No Standard Autistic Sensory Profile
Before going any further, this needs to be clear: there is no sensory template for autism.
One autistic person may desperately avoid noise while another seeks it. Someone may hate unexpected light touch but love firm pressure. One person might happily spin or swing for long periods while another becomes nauseated from relatively ordinary movement. Some autistic people have sensory differences that significantly affect everyday life, while others may have much less obvious sensory needs.
Even within one person, sensory tolerance can change. What was manageable yesterday might be unbearable today because the person is tired, hungry, anxious, unwell, already overloaded or simply starting the day with less capacity.
Research reflects that variability. Studies consistently describe differences in sensory over-responsivity, under-responsivity and sensory seeking among autistic people, while also showing considerable variation between individuals. That variation is one of the most important things to understand about autism: a shared diagnosis does not create a shared sensory experience.
There is no cookie-cutter autism.
Sometimes the House Is Louder Than Everyone Else Realises
Families often become aware of sounds that most other people barely register.
The refrigerator hums. A microwave beeps. A fluorescent light buzzes. Somebody scrapes a knife across a plate. The bathroom fan runs. The neighbour starts the mower. A chair drags across the tiles. Two people speak at once.
None of those things may seem especially loud to everyone else.
That does not mean they are insignificant to the autistic person experiencing them.
A sound can be quiet in terms of decibels and still be extremely intrusive. Pitch, repetition, unpredictability and the person's ability to control or escape the sound can all matter.
That can create one of those frustrating family situations where everybody else is thinking, “It isn't even that loud,” while the autistic person is experiencing something much closer to, “Please make it stop.”
And when that happens repeatedly, it can be difficult for everyone involved. The autistic person may feel as though nobody believes what they are experiencing. Parents and siblings may feel as though perfectly ordinary household activities are constantly being interrupted.
Neither experience needs to be dismissed for the other to be valid.
The Spoon Wasn't Really the Problem
Picture the end of an ordinary weekday.
A child has spent all day at school. The classroom was noisy. The playground was busy. Their shirt has been irritating them since lunchtime, but they kept wearing it. Someone changed the normal seating arrangement. The trip home was hot and slow. The radio was playing in the car.
They arrive home.
The television is on. Dinner smells different from usual. Their sibling is talking. The dog is barking outside. Somebody asks them three questions about their day.
Then somebody accidentally drops a spoon on the kitchen floor.
The spoon hits the tiles.
And everything falls apart.
From the outside, the explanation becomes:
“They screamed because someone dropped a spoon.”
But the spoon may not actually be the story.
It may simply have been the final piece of sensory information added to a nervous system that had been managing too much for far too long.
That distinction matters because if we only look at the last thirty seconds, we can spend all our time trying to prevent the spoon from falling and never examine the six hours that came before it.
Sometimes the more useful question is not “What triggered this?”
It is “What had already happened?”
Was the person tired? Had they eaten? Had something changed unexpectedly? Had they spent hours in a noisy environment? Were their clothes uncomfortable? Had they been trying to sit still all day? Were lots of people talking to them? Had they been masking discomfort because there was nowhere safe to show it?
The final event may be tiny.
The accumulated load may not be.
Sometimes the Noise You Make Feels Different From the Noise Someone Else Makes
This one can cause genuine arguments at home.
An autistic child may hum loudly, tap objects repeatedly or make the same sound for twenty minutes. Then their sibling begins humming and suddenly the autistic child is covering their ears and yelling at them to stop.
From the sibling's point of view, that can feel enormously unfair.
“Why are they allowed to make noise but I’m not?”
One possible explanation is the difference between controlled and uncontrolled sensory input.
When a person produces the sound themselves, they know when it is coming. They control the rhythm, volume and duration. The sound itself may also be providing useful sensory input.
Someone else's sound arrives on someone else's timing.
That does not mean the autistic person's sensory needs automatically become more important than everybody else's right to exist normally in their own home. Sometimes two completely legitimate needs collide.
That reality matters too.
Family life is not a therapy room where every variable can be controlled. There are siblings, televisions, appliances, pets, visitors, cooking smells, school mornings and people who have their own sensory preferences.
Understanding autism does not mean pretending those conflicts disappear.
It means having a better chance of understanding why they are happening.
Touch Can Be Far More Complicated Than “Likes It” or “Doesn't Like It”
Sensory differences around touch can seem especially contradictory.
A person may hate somebody brushing lightly past their arm but actively seek firm pressure. They may love being squeezed between cushions but become distressed if somebody unexpectedly places a hand on their shoulder.
The difference is not necessarily inconsistency.
Light, unpredictable touch and deep, predictable pressure are very different sensory experiences.
Clothing can create similar problems. A shirt tag can become impossible to ignore. Socks can feel wrong because the seam has moved slightly. A wet sleeve can dominate everything else. A piece of hair touching the neck may be unbearable.
And this is where sensory processing stops being an abstract autism concept and becomes Tuesday morning in someone's house.
Everyone needs to leave.
Lunches are packed. Shoes are on. Someone is already running late.
And now the socks are wrong.
Not the colour. Not the style.
The seam.
You straighten it.
Still wrong.
You try another pair.
Still wrong.
The frustration starts rising. Someone says, “They're only socks.”
Except the person wearing them is not experiencing “only socks”.
They are experiencing the sensation those socks are creating, and telling them to ignore it does not automatically make that sensation disappear.

Sometimes the Problem Is Not Too Much — It Is Not Enough
Sensory processing differences do not only involve avoiding stimulation.
Some autistic people actively seek it.
That can mean movement, pressure, texture, sound, vibration, strong flavours or repetitive sensations.
At home it might look like someone pacing constantly, rocking, jumping, spinning, climbing, squeezing into tight spaces, pushing against furniture, chewing clothing, rubbing the same material repeatedly, making repetitive sounds or wanting music much louder than everybody else does.
A parent might find themselves saying, “Can you please stop jumping for five minutes?” for what feels like the hundredth time that afternoon.
The movement may look unnecessary from the outside.
But the person's body may be telling them something very different.
Movement may help them regulate. Pressure may help them feel where their body is. Repetition may make the world feel more predictable. A particular sensation may simply feel good.
And sometimes there is no complicated explanation required.
Sometimes autistic people seek sensory experiences because they enjoy them.
That matters too.
Not every autistic behaviour needs to be turned into therapy.
There Are More Than Five Senses

Most of us were taught that humans have five senses: sight, hearing, smell, taste and touch.
Those are important, but they do not fully explain some of the sensory behaviours families see.
The vestibular system contributes to balance, movement and information about the position of the head. Swinging, spinning, rocking, jumping and hanging upside down all involve vestibular input.
That helps explain why one autistic person may seek movement constantly while another finds movement extremely unpleasant.
The proprioceptive system provides information from muscles and joints about where the body is and how it is moving. Activities involving pushing, pulling, lifting, squeezing, jumping and firm pressure can provide strong proprioceptive input.
That may be part of the reason why crashing into cushions or squeezing into a tight space can feel regulating for some people.
Then there is interoception: the body's ability to detect internal signals such as hunger, thirst, pain, temperature, tiredness and needing the toilet.
Interoception deserves its own article later in this series because it connects directly with some of the realities families often struggle with most, including feeding, toileting and recognising physical discomfort.
Sensory Seeking Doesn't Always Look Like Running Around the House
Sometimes sensory seeking is much quieter.
It can be the person who rubs the same piece of fabric between their fingers while talking.
The person who squeezes putty while concentrating.
The child who repeatedly runs kinetic sand through their hands.
The teenager who chews every pen they are given.
The adult whose foot is almost constantly moving underneath the desk.
The person who picks up objects and smells them before using them.
The repeated behaviour may irritate everyone else, particularly when it involves damaged clothing, ruined stationery or constant tapping.
But before treating the behaviour as something that simply needs to stop, it can be useful to ask what the person might be getting from it.
Is it helping them concentrate? Does it provide a particular texture or resistance? Is it calming? Is it enjoyable? Does it help with body awareness?
Sometimes the object itself is irrelevant.
The sensory property is what matters.
The Expensive Sensory Toy Nobody Uses
This is another experience many families eventually encounter.
You research sensory toys. You read reviews. You order something specifically marketed for sensory regulation.
It arrives.
The person plays with the cardboard box.
The expensive sensory product sits untouched while the packaging becomes the favourite object for the next fortnight.
Or you buy a collection of specialised fidgets and discover that the thing somebody actually wants is the silicone edge of an old phone case, one particular blanket or a piece of fabric they have already owned for years.
That is not necessarily because sensory tools are useless.
It is because “sensory toy” is a product category, not a sensory need.
The person may be seeking resistance, movement, pressure, texture, vibration or sound. If the expensive product does not provide the particular input they want, the marketing label on the box means very little.
We will return to that later in this series when we look specifically at stimming, fidgets, chewing and regulation tools.

Regulation Can Be Quiet
Sensory regulation is often pictured as movement, headphones, swings or brightly coloured sensory equipment.
Sometimes it is much less obvious.
It can be lying on the floor and watching the same thing spin.
Looking closely at light moving across a wall.
Listening to the same sound repeatedly.
Holding one familiar object.
Sitting quietly in a dark bedroom after school.
Repeating a movement that looks meaningless to everyone else.
Sometimes another person's instinct is to interrupt because the activity does not look productive.
But if it is safe and helping the person regulate, doing nothing may occasionally be one of the most useful responses available.
Sometimes “Helping” Makes It Worse
A person starts becoming overwhelmed.
Everybody notices.
And everybody starts helping at once.
One person asks what is wrong. Another tells them to come and sit somewhere else. Somebody touches their shoulder. Someone repeats an instruction because the first one was ignored. Another person tells everyone else to be quiet.
Suddenly the person who was already struggling has several voices, movement around them, physical contact, questions and expectations to process.
The intention is good.
The result may be more sensory input.
That is why there is no universal response to sensory overload.
Some people want silence.
Some want familiar speech.
Some need movement.
Some want pressure.
Some need everybody to step away.
Some find being left alone frightening.
The goal is not to memorise what autistic people supposedly need.
It is to know the person well enough to understand what they are communicating.

What Can Families Actually Do With This?
There is no perfect sensory checklist that gives you the answer.
But patterns can tell you a great deal.
If a difficult situation keeps happening, look beyond the final behaviour. Think about what happened during the hour before it, where the person had been, what they had been tolerating, what they were prevented from doing, whether they had eaten or slept properly, and what they sought afterwards.
Pay attention to what consistently helps as well as what consistently causes difficulty.
A person who always seeks heavy pressure after a demanding outing may be telling you something useful about regulation. Someone who consistently retreats to a dark room after school may be showing you that the day costs them more sensory energy than anybody realised.
And sometimes the pattern surprises you.
The “problem” may not be the shopping centre itself. It may be the hand dryer in the bathroom.
It may not be getting dressed. It may be one particular fabric.
It may not be refusing to participate. It may be that the activity is always scheduled in the loudest room.
For community activities, this can mean choosing quieter times, shorter visits, predictable environments, opportunities to step away, or simply recognising that meaningful participation does not require someone to tolerate an environment that is overwhelming them. What Does the Science Actually Tell Us?
Sensory differences in autism are well established in research.
Studies commonly describe three broad patterns: hyperreactivity, where sensory input may produce unusually strong or aversive responses; hyporeactivity, where responses may be reduced or delayed; and sensory seeking, where a person actively pursues particular forms of sensory input.
These patterns can overlap.
A large population-based study involving records for more than 25,000 autistic children found sensory features documented in a substantial majority of the sample. Other large studies and meta-analyses similarly show that sensory differences are common while also demonstrating significant differences between individuals.
That second part matters just as much as the first.
Science supports the existence of sensory differences.
Science also supports the fact that autism is highly variable.
Research into the neurological mechanisms behind these experiences is still developing, and there is no single brain explanation that can accurately predict what an individual autistic person's sensory profile will look like.
So the science gives us useful categories.
It does not give us a recipe.
Don't Turn Understanding Into Another Autism Rulebook
Once families learn about sensory processing, another trap can appear.
Noise problem? Buy headphones.
Movement seeking? Buy a swing.
Chewing? Buy a chew tool.
Overload? Send them to a quiet room.
That can quickly become another version of cookie-cutter autism.
Headphones can be life-changing for one person and intolerable for somebody who hates pressure around their ears.
Deep pressure can regulate one person and make another person panic.
A quiet room can help one autistic person recover while making somebody else feel isolated or unsafe.
One person needs more movement.
Another needs the world to stop moving.
Understanding sensory processing should not teach us what autistic people need.
It should teach us to ask better questions about what this autistic person needs.
Understanding Doesn't Make Family Life Easy
The socks still have to go on eventually.
The vacuum cleaner still has to be used.
A sibling still deserves to talk, sing and exist normally in their own home.
The family still has places they need to go.
Sometimes one person's sensory needs are directly incompatible with another person's.
Sometimes everyone has done their best and the afternoon still falls apart.
Parents can understand sensory processing extremely well and still become frustrated.
Autistic people can understand their own sensory needs extremely well and still become overloaded.
Knowledge does not magically remove difficulty.
It changes the way we understand the difficulty.
Instead of beginning with:
“Why are you behaving like this?”
we can sometimes begin with:
“What are you experiencing that I'm not?”
That is a much smaller sentence than most of this article.
It deserves to be.
