Full Job Description

Why Work with Dantae Support Services?

At Dantae Support Services, we believe quality support begins with genuine relationships, respect, understanding and consistency.

Our Support Workers help people with disability live with greater independence, confidence, choice and control. For participants experiencing mental health challenges or complex support needs, this also means creating a calm, predictable and respectful environment where the person feels heard, supported and safe.

We value Support Workers who take the time to understand the person they are supporting, recognise changes in presentation or wellbeing, communicate thoughtfully and provide assistance with dignity, patience and professionalism.

This particular role is suited to workers who are confident supporting people experiencing psychosocial disability, emotional distress and complex situations while maintaining clear professional boundaries and a participant-centred approach.

What You Can Expect

  • A participant-specific role within Brisbane's northern suburbs

  • Casual employment with ongoing shifts available

  • Support from approachable coordinators and management

  • Clear participant support plans, routines and expectations

  • A strong focus on consistent participant and worker matching

  • Opportunities for ongoing learning and competency development

  • Support when managing complex situations or escalating concerns

  • A workplace that values communication, accountability and teamwork

  • Meaningful work supporting a participant to maintain independence, stability and community connection

We want our Support Workers to feel informed, supported and confident in their role, because well-supported workers contribute to safer, more consistent and positive experiences for participants.

About the Role

As a Male NDIS Support Worker – Mental Health & Complex Support Needs with Dantae Support Services, you will primarily provide person-centred support to a male participant living with mental health and complex support needs.

The participant may experience periods of significant emotional distress and has a history that includes self-harming behaviours. The role therefore requires workers who can remain calm, observant and professional, recognise changes in risk or wellbeing, follow established support and safety plans, and escalate concerns appropriately.

Your role is not to make decisions for the participant or unnecessarily restrict their independence. Instead, you will work alongside the participant to support everyday living, routines, appointments, community participation, wellbeing and personal goals while promoting choice, dignity and control.

Support should be delivered using trauma-informed, person-centred and recovery-oriented approaches, with particular attention to consistency, communication, professional boundaries and the participant's individual preferences.

You will work within established support plans, Behaviour Support Plans where applicable, risk-management strategies and organisational procedures.

Reports to: General Manager / Service Coordinator

Your Role May Include

  • Supporting everyday routines and activities within the participant's home

  • Providing personal care and assistance where required

  • Supporting appointments and engagement with health or community services

  • Assisting with community access and participation

  • Supporting social engagement and meaningful activities

  • Assisting the participant to maintain routines and daily structure

  • Supporting skill development and greater independence

  • Providing calm and respectful support during periods of emotional distress

  • Recognising and responding appropriately to changes in presentation, mood or behaviour

  • Supporting the participant where there is an identified risk of self-harm

  • Following established safety plans, Behaviour Support Plans and risk-management strategies

  • Using appropriate de-escalation and trauma-informed approaches within your training and role

  • Escalating concerns promptly when additional assistance or intervention is required

  • Supporting recovery-oriented goals and positive everyday outcomes

  • Providing transport to appointments, activities or community locations where required

  • Maintaining accurate progress notes, incident reports and other required documentation

  • Communicating relevant changes and observations to coordinators and the wider support team

The duties of this role will be guided by the participant's individual support needs, preferences, current support plans and your demonstrated training and competencies.

Key Responsibilities

As part of the Dantae Support Services team, you will be expected to:

  • Provide respectful, discreet and person-centred support

  • Build a professional relationship based on consistency, trust and respect

  • Support the participant in accordance with their individual goals, preferences and support plans

  • Promote participant choice, control, dignity, empowerment and independence

  • Support mental health and psychosocial needs using appropriate recovery-oriented approaches

  • Recognise changes that may indicate increasing distress, risk or support needs

  • Respond appropriately to incidents or concerns relating to self-harm or risk of self-harm

  • Follow established escalation, incident-management and emergency procedures

  • Follow relevant care plans, Behaviour Support Plans and risk-management strategies

  • Apply trauma-informed approaches in everyday support

  • Use appropriate de-escalation strategies within your training and competency

  • Maintain appropriate professional boundaries

  • Prioritise the participant's safety, dignity, comfort and wellbeing

  • Complete accurate case notes, progress notes, incident reports and required records

  • Identify and appropriately report changes, concerns, incidents and risks

  • Communicate clearly with the participant, coordinators, relevant family or representatives and other members of the support team

  • Work independently while recognising when additional assistance or escalation is required

  • Follow organisational policies, procedures and applicable NDIS requirements

  • Work within your training, competence and defined scope of responsibility

Support Workers are not expected to independently provide clinical mental health treatment or act outside their training or role. Where clinical, emergency or specialist intervention is required, workers must follow the participant's established plans and Dantae Support Services escalation procedures.

Participant-Specific Worker Requirement

This position primarily supports one male participant who has requested male Support Workers because of the nature of the assistance provided, including personal care, privacy, dignity and support within the participant's home.

The requirement relates specifically to this participant and this vacancy rather than to Support Worker positions generally across Dantae Support Services.

We remain committed to an inclusive workplace and welcome applications from people of diverse backgrounds and experiences for roles suited to their skills and the individual requirements and preferences of the participants we support.

Availability

This is a casual, ongoing position based primarily within Brisbane's northern suburbs.

Depending on the participant's support needs, shifts may include:

  • Day shifts

  • Afternoon shifts

  • Evening shifts

  • Weekends

  • Public holidays

  • Sleepover shifts where applicable

  • Active overnight shifts where applicable

  • Transport and community-based support

Reliability and consistency are particularly important for this role. Participants experiencing complex mental health needs can benefit significantly from predictable support relationships, familiar workers and clear communication around rostered shifts.

Essential Requirements

Applicants for this participant-specific role should have:

  • Demonstrated experience supporting people with mental health, psychosocial disability or complex support needs

  • Experience supporting people who have experienced self-harm, suicidal ideation, significant emotional distress or emotional dysregulation

  • An understanding of trauma-informed and person-centred support

  • An understanding of recovery-oriented practice

  • The ability to remain calm and professional during challenging or emotionally heightened situations

  • The ability to recognise changes in risk, behaviour or wellbeing and escalate concerns appropriately

  • A current Australian driver licence

  • Access to a reliable vehicle where required for participant support

  • Appropriate vehicle insurance where a vehicle is used for work

  • The right to work in Australia

  • Any additional competencies required for the participant being supported

Relevant qualifications and training are highly regarded, including:

  • Certificate III or IV in Individual Support

  • Certificate IV in Mental Health

  • Certificate III or IV in Disability

  • Certificate IV in Community Services

  • Other relevant disability, mental health, community services or human-services qualifications

  • Crisis intervention training

  • De-escalation training

  • Trauma-informed practice training

  • Positive Behaviour Support training

  • Experience implementing Positive Behaviour Support Plans

  • Experience in psychosocial disability support

  • Experience in complex or high-intensity support environments

Relevant practical experience is particularly important for this position. Applicants should be comfortable working independently while knowing when a situation requires additional support, escalation or emergency intervention.

Working with someone experiencing complex mental health needs requires more than simply completing tasks.

For this role, Dantae Support Services particularly values Support Workers who:

  • Remain calm and composed when another person is distressed

  • Are approachable without becoming overly familiar

  • Build trust gradually and respect professional boundaries

  • Listen before reacting

  • Recognise that behaviour can communicate unmet needs, distress or discomfort

  • Avoid judgement when supporting someone through difficult periods

  • Respect the participant's dignity, privacy and individuality

  • Support choice and control wherever safely possible

  • Understand and respect dignity of risk

  • Document events objectively and accurately

  • Understand the importance of consistency between workers

  • Work collaboratively with coordinators and the wider support team

The right worker for this position will combine compassion with professionalism, confidence with patience, and safety awareness with respect for participant choice and independence.
